UK Grant Making Charitable Trust and Foundation FAQs

  • Can a charity donate to a non charity?  As long as a charity governing document allows it to make grants, a charity can make grants to any individual or organisation, as long as it is for exclusively charitable purposes that fall within its objects.
  • Can charities make grants to schools and hospitals? A charity can make grants to public sector organisations, such as schools and hospitals, as long as it is for exclusively charitable purposes, within its objects, and not for items that should and could be funded by public budgets.
  • How do we get funding for a non registered charity?  Although some charitable grant makers will only fund registered charities, many will fund non registered groups.  Usually referred to in by grant makers as constituted groups (that is, have a non profit constitution) with a bank account in the name of the group.
  • What makes a successful grant application?  You can maximise your chances of a successful grant application by ensuring you meet eligibility criteria and priorities, engaging the grant maker, if possible, and submitting a succinct application that is urgent, compelling and emotionally engaging, and supported by facts and evidence.
  • Which grants have a quick response? Generally, small grants will have quicker turnaround times.  However, grant makers often consider applications quarterly, or even annually, so look for those with approaching deadlines.
  • What is unrestricted funding? Unrestricted funding, sometimes called core cost funding, is grant funding for charity running costs, such as salaries, rent and other overheads, rather than to fund a specified project.
  • Who can apply for a charitable grant? Charitable grant makers will only make grants to individuals and organisations for exclusively charitable purposes and will normally not make grants to groups that aren’t constituted (have a non-profit constitution) and a bank account in the group’s name.
